Salem Courthouse, Salem, NY. Thursday, March 18th will feature Eagleville author and educator, Marcia Reiss. Ms. Reiss will speak about the historic architecture of Salem and Cambridge and the true roots of the fine American homes and buildings we cherish. There is no admission charge for the lectures, and the public is welcome. It is advisable to contact the CCC to reserve a seat. salemcourthouse.org.

 

Cronkhite Lecture Series, Free and Open to the Public: All lectures will be held 7:00 pm at the Wing Northup House, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY.

 Cronkhite Lecture #1: Wednesday, April 21; 7:00 pm. Early American Tinsmithing: Presented by Walter Fleming. Walter will be speaking on Early American Tinsmithing. Attendees are invited to bring along examples of early tin. Walter will bring a variety of tin examples. He will also deliver his talk in period clothing.

Cronkhite Lecture #2:Wednesday, April 28; 7:00 pm. Open Hearth Cooking: Prensented by Sally Brillon, an Open Hearth Cooking instructor. Sally's talk will be accompanied by a slide presentation. She will also bring some early open hearth cooking equipment.

Cronkhite Lecture #3 Wednesday, May 5; 7:00 pm Eighteenth Century Tailoring Prensented by Bob Goering. In his talk Bob will have many fabric swatches and tailoring examples to share with the audience. He will deliver his talk in period clothing.

Historic Preservations Awards Ceremony: Friday, May 21, 10am - Noon at 383 Broadway, Ft. Edward (Washington County Court Complex). Historic Placques and Certificates will be awarded to winners who have applied for and completed a restoration of an historic structure in 2009. The awards are given by the Washington County Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

Sunday, June 6th   at 1:00 p.m., Eliza Tefft Anthony Ceremony. a ceremony will be held at the cemetery on County Rt 61 in the Town of Jackson (across the Batten Kill from the Anthony house which is on Rt 29) where Eliza's stone has been placed next to her grandparents as we believe that is her original burial plot. A reception celebrating Eliza’s life and the contribution of the Anthony family to Battenville will be held following the ceremony.Willard's Mt. DAR felt that it was important to repair the gravestone and replace it in the Battenville Cemetery where her grandparents are buried and other members of her family rest.

Slate Roofing Program, Thursday June 10, 7:30pm at the East Hebron Presbyterian Church on State Route 22. Eric Braymer is a native of East Hebron and is a slate roof preservationist/contractor. Mr. Braymer will present a Power Point program covering the local slate roofing industry, roofing tools, and the preservation of our local slate roofs. This program should appeal to all historic preservationiists and home owners with slate roofs. The program is free and open to the public. Call 642-3465 for more information.

Thursday, July 8. Giving wildlife a helping hand will be the subject of the Hebron Preservation Society’s July 8th program. Staff members of North Country Wild Care will describe the organization’s mission and activities conducted in 11 North Country counties including Washington, Saratoga and Warren counties. This non-profit organization promotes education, trains volunteers, and oversees the rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals.

The program and live animal presentation will be held at the East Hebron Presbyterian Church, 6559 NYS Route 22, Hebron, Washington County at 7:00 PM. Attendees are asked to donate pet food (canned, kibble, or treats) and baby food (jars of meats, fruits or vegetables). The public is invited to attend; the church is handicapped accessible.

Saturday, July 10, Visit the Richard McGuire Farm Museum with WCHS at 56 Scotch Hill Rd., Jackson, NY. Join us for a carry-in picnic lunch (on you own) and then listen to a presentation by museum owner Richard McGuire. Then browse his displays throughout several buildings. These items include hand farm tools, product and food processing implements, and both horse-drawn and early motorized vehicles from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. During his lifetime of dairy farming and other agricultural pursuits, McGuire has served as president of the state Farm Bureau (from 1970 to 1984) and as commissioner of the state's Department of Agriculture and Markets (from 1989-1995).

Sunday, July 18, 1 thru 4pm-- Easton Garden Tour. This is a fund raising event for WCHS. There will be a program at 1pm followed by a nine garden visit. A map/ticket will be available for purchase that day. Final details are forthcoming and will be printed in our Summer newsletter.

July 31, Saturday, Annual Country Fair & Antique Auction at the Fort House Musem, 29 Broadway, Ft. Edward. Arts & Crafts, Antiques & Collectibles, Venders, Books, Plants & Garage Sale. The museum gift shop will be open. Lunch and refreshment available and tours of the museum campus. Garage, estate and book sale 9-4. Auction begins at 10:00 AM (preview 9 AM). Washington County Band performs at 2 PM

Sept. 16, 7pm at the White Church in Salem-- Joiners Wanted: Important works of Domestic Architecture and the Building Trade in Washington County at the Turn of the 19th Century presented by William Krattinger. Mr. Krattinger will examine three high-style 19th Cen. elaborate frame houses: Blanchard-Williams in Salem (for Maria Williams and Anthony Blanchard), Dr. Jonathan Dorr in Cambridge, and the Austin Wells house in White Creek.. Mr. Krattinger is a Historic Preservation Specialist with the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Sept. 24, Friday, 7:30 PM at the Rogers Island Visitor Center. A program by archeologist Dr. David Starbuck, open to the public, free admission.

 Sunday Oct. 3, 1 - 3pm, Archival Workshop presentd by Barbara Anderson. Our WCHS Librarian, Barbara Anderson, will present another workshop covering archival techniques. The topic will be announced soon.

Nov. 1, 7pm at the United Church in Greenwich-- "Strength Without Compromise: Womanly Influence and Political Identity in Turn-of-the-Century Rural Upstate New York" - A book signing and Program presented by Teri Gay. Local author, Teri Gay, will present a program relating to her book which discusses the women's suffrage movement in the Southern Adirondacks and tells the stories of local leaders in the movement. Her book will be available for sale, and she will sign copies on request.
